Most disturbing of these is the way in which women are positioned as objects that motivate the male plot.

Standouts are J. A nice example of how a blaxploitation film should feel. Moody, hot n sweaty and with a funkadelic soundtrack to drive the funny narrative on its merry way. With opening scenes of black men in suits and hats striking elegant fighting poses with their trusty flick-knives and then sliding inside a titty-bar to get the man-talkin' done, as the girls get to grindin', it just packs in the 70s stereotypes from start to end, including the obligatory preacher man.

It's a promising storyline, but the execution is a bit rough. Putting that and a few overly-forceful rapey moments to one side though, this is a mostly fun minutes of honkytonk vengeance.

As a former New Orleanian, I'm delighted to finally see a film that tells the truth about the city: If you go to a Bourbon Street hypnotism show, you WILL end up possessed by a psychotic s black market meat dealer with a vendetta against Louis Gossett, Jr. For real, though, this movie is all kinds of awesome.

This is a possession based film that is well paced, interesting at parts, and Glynn Turman does a great job with the lead. I am surprised that a movie like this would be added to the hooptober bonus picks because of how much gratuitous violence against women takes place When it wasn't making me uncomfortable in the bad ways there is a classic appeal to the story.
